What's a Frame and why is it needed?
Frames provide a finshed look, light block, and a means for mounting. Some applications require a specific frame but frequently you'll have more than one frame choice.

Frame options:

unframed- direct hinge - hanging strip

z frames - covers window imperfections, recesses shutter, Looks great --- recomended were possible

Deco frames - simple installation, attractive, flush mount --- great for bullnosed windows

L frames -  extended for doors,

Note: Always remember to add the frame when calculating the square footage of the window for pricing.

Unframed:
Occasionally you'll see shutters with the hinges mounted directly to the wall.  This provides no adjustments and no coverage for light gap.  Although economical it is not very practical and doesn't provide the finished look most people seek in new homes.

Hanging Strip
Hanging strips simplify installation, provide light gap coverage and allow adjustments to panel postion for leveling and fit.  The Inside Mount Hanging strip is a square molding that fits behind the shutter on each side and optionally on the top and bottom.  The hanging strip is nailed or screwed to the wall and the shutter hinges are mounted to the hanging strip. The hinges are adjustable by loosening the screws and reseting the position of the frame.  Two panel units can be adjusted to meet poperly in the center.

Hanging strips can also be used as outside mount where the strip is mounted to the wall adjacent to the window.  Normal hinges are used in this installation.  The shutter panel may overlap the window to cover the light gap and hide the edge of the window.

 When to use Hanging Strip
  • Simple, inexpensive and yet functional.
  • Windows with molding - where the shutter frame is not needed.  Exposes moldings.
  • This option is best for smaller, less formal applications.
  • This could be used in closets or garages where a better frame is not needed.

"L" Frame
"L" frames are simple basic frames.  They may be used as inside mounts or as outside mounts.  When mounting a shutter directly on a door an extended "L" frame may be used instead of putting "build out" under a standard "L" frame.

Caution should be used when mounting an "L" frame on the inside of a window frame.  It is important for the window to be perfectly square or the shutter installation will be much more difficult.  If the window is unsquare or inconsistent then those imperfections will be accentuated by the "L" frame.  The factory deducts 1/4" from the measurements provided.  When measuring for an inside mount "L" Frame you should confirm that the diagonal measurements are equal to confirm that the window is square.  If not, you should select another frame.

When pricing "L" frames you must add the width of the frame to each side to calculate the total square footage.

Restrctions and concerns:

  • Measurements and window squareness is important on inside mount "L" frames

When to (and not to) use "L" Frames:
  • use extended "L" frames when mounting to doors or where shutters must be moved forward so the louvers clear obstacles
  • use "L" frames where small clearance is available for mounting frames

Gallery "Z" Frame - The frame for a masterpiece window.

"Z" frames cover imperfect window openings, simplify installation and allow the panels to be properly recessed in the opening. This is a significant improvement over an inside mount "L" frame.

When to use "Z" frames:
  • for sheet rock openings or uneven wall diminsions
  • for unsquare openings (diagonal measurements don't match)
  • for attractive finshed molded "built in" look

When pricing Z frames please remember to add the "flap" width (1") to each side.
(2" to width, 1" to height for 3 side frames)

Deco Frame

Deco Frames simplifying installation by allowing screw to be hidden behind the trim cap.  This is one of the simplest and yet most attractive and effective installations.  The frame is mounted flush to the wall and nailed or screwed directly through the front of the base of the frame.  A "trim cap" is installed over the screws to conceal the screws and avoid spackling.

The Paramont deco frame is designed to conceal the trim cap edges by having the trim cap insert into a groove in the frame base.  The other side of the trim cap is flush to the wall.  This is not only attactive but beautiful!

When pricing Deco frames please remember to provide frame to frame measurments.  Add about 3" to each side overlapped.  Some use the sill to sill measurment for the width.

Restrictions:
  • requires flat wide surface surrounding windows -
  • not recommended for windows with moldings
  • not recommended on doors (would require buildout)

When to use Deco Frames:
  • for flush mounting to the wall next to a window.
  • when window recess is limited
  • Bull nosed windows
  • where shutter is to be moved forward to avoid obstacles for louvers (cranks, latches)
  • where a beautiful framed window look is desired.
